Bones of ‘small-bodied humans’ found in Micronesian cave

Friday, March 21, 2008

Another population of small humans has been reported, this time in caves in Micronesia.

Lee Berger, Steven Churchill, Bonita De Klerk and Rhonda Quinn, a team of paleontologists and anthropologists from South Africa and the United States document a group of “small-bodied humans” found in the ” in limestone caves in the rock islands of Palau, Micronesia.” The report, in a recent edition of the open access journal, PLoS ONE (2008 3:3) argues that these small people may “represent a congenitally abnormal individual drawn from a small-bodied island population of Homo Sapiens.” The term for this condition is Insular Dwarfism described in Foster’s Rule. Different radio carbon samples at the site date between 3000 and 4500 calendar years before the present, with the 3000 year old dates being judged the most reliable.

The authors argue, “Based on the evidence from Palau, we [Berger et al] hypothesize that reduction in the size of the face and chin, large dental size and other features noted here may in some cases be correlates of extreme body size reduction in H. sapiens.”

Unlike the 2004 find of the Flores dwarf human population (dated from 95,000 to 13,000 years ago), known as Homo floresienses and nicknamed hobbits, researchers do not consider this population to be a separate hominid population. They also suggest that this more recent population casts some doubt on H. floresienses being a separate species, and that,

“These features when seen in Flores may be best explained as correlates of small body size in an island adaptation, regardless of taxonomic affinity…[This] Palauan sample supports at least the possibility that the Flores hominins are simply an island adapted population of H. sapiens, perhaps with some individuals expressing congenital abnormalities.”

In support of this, Berger et al also argued that although the dwarf humans appeared to have many features in commons with Homo sapiens, there seems to be many features that are not usually associated with Homo sapiens.

Fire kills three and closes main transport route into Western Australia

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

A fire in the Borrabbin National Park between Southern Cross and Coolgardie Western Australia, has so far burnt out 29,000 hectares and killed three truck drivers when the convoy they were travelling in was engulfed by the flames. Great Eastern Highway the primary road for all traffic from Perth heading to the East Coast of Australia has been closed. An alternate route is in place, police are diverting traffic at Norseman. The diversion adds 250 km(160 mi) for the journey to Perth.

The three truck drivers died on Sunday night after they joined a convoy that was released from Coolgardie after being told that the road was safe. Kieran McNamara director general of the Department of Environment and Conservation(DEC) admitted that it had been caught out by its decision to reopen the road at 8pm (wst) on 30 December.

Mr McNamara said “The decision was made with the advice from people at the firefront, and with the latest weather forecasts, and was judged to be the right decision and the safe decision at the time and in those circumstances… Regrettably and with hindsight, that’s not how it’s turned out.”

The driver of another truck in the convoy that was destroyed escaped with burns to his hands and was rushed through the fire front by firefighters to Yellowdine, another driver was rescued uninjured and return to Coolgardie, a spokesman for Whiteline transport the owners of this truck were thankful their driver survived unharmed saying the cost of the vehicle lost was about AU$400,000 plus cargo. Police confirmed that four trucks were destroyed by the fire.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia reported that they were fighting the fire without using water. All efforts were focused on building fire breaks with heavy machinery to contain the fire, that 90 volunteer fire fighters on the scene were there to defend the bulldozers.

The fire is still burning on a 150 km (90 mi) front, DEC spokesman says fire fighters are hoping to bring the fire under control with an expected cool change on Wednesday. The Weather Bureau has forecast temperatures to return above 40°C(105°F) by Thursday.

Local Police say that Great Eastern Highway will remain closed until the fire is under control and the damaged vehicles have been removed from the scene, at this stage its not expected to occur before Sunday.

Bollywood stars Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan engaged

Monday, January 15, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

Legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has confirmed that his son Abhishek and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai were engaged last evening at a private ceremony at the Bachchans’ residence in Mumbai.

It is believed that the younger Bachchan proposed to his bride-to-be in New York, soon after the Toronto premiere of his new movie Guru. The media had been following the romance between the two closely for some time past, but this is the first time they have come out in the open about their relationship. Rumours that the couple were planning to spread the know began to spread in November last year, when they visited the Sankat Mochan Temple together, with some even saying that they had already been married even earlier at the Meenakshi temple in Madurai

According to one daily, the wedding will take place either on February 19 or March 7 at the Hyatt Mumbai. “The children have decided. We are very happy and thought we should go ahead with the ‘roka’ ceremony. It was held in the evening.”, Amitabh Bachchan said of the ceremony, which was attended by the family’s close friends, including Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, Aishwarya’s parents, and industrialist Anil Ambani and the latter’s wife Tina Ambani. The couple have now flown to Ujjain to take a holy dip in the Ganga.

1 million people welcome 2007 in Sydney

Monday, January 1, 2007

A crowd of approximately 1 million has welcomed the new year in Sydney overnight. Many of the crowd had camped out since 6 AM AEDT (7PM UTC) to ensure they had the best vantage point for the fireworks displays at 9 PM and 12 AM. Earlier predictions of rain failed to dampen enthusiastic revellers and fortunately did not eventuate.

According to police, vantage points were Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House closed around 7 PM.

This year’s theme was “A diamond night in Emerald City” and celebrated the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s diamond anniversary of 75 years which will fall in March.

As usual, the bridge became the centre piece of Sydney’s celebrations with a question mark turning into a coat hanger during the 9 PM fireworks show before a diamond appeared at 11 PM.

Entertainment was held in the city throughout the day, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. Revellers counted down the final seconds of 2006 with numbers on the side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The festivities are estimated to have cost AUD $4 million and organisers claim their fireworks display is “the largest in the world”. Sydney’s celebrations were broadcast on television live around the world as other countries prepared their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Despite the large crowd, police made only 58 arrests for offences including offensive conduct, stealing, assaulting police, goods in custody, assault, drink driving and affray.

Ambulance officers were called to 1,139 incidents in Sydney with another 900 in country areas.

2012 Olympics clash with Ramadan

Sunday, October 15, 2006

Muslim groups from across the world are criticising the organisers of the 2012 Olympics in London after it was revealed that the games will take place over Ramadan. The most holy month in the Muslim calendar, which will take place from the 21 July to 20 August in 2012, involves fasting during daylight hours and will affect an estimated 3,000 athletes.

Joanna Manning Cooper, spokesman for the games said: “We did know about it when we submitted our bid and we have always believed that we could find ways to accommodate it.”Nevertheless, this will come as a huge embarrassment for the organisers who have tried to ensure the event involve all of Britain’s ethnic communities.A quarter of the athletes who took part in the 2004 Athens Olympics were from predominantly Muslim countries and the fast will put any athletes involved at a clear disadvantage.

The chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, Massoud Shadjared said: “This is going to disadvantage the athletes and alienate the Asian communities by saying they don’t matter. It’s not only going to affect the participants, it’s going to affect all the people who want to watch the games.”

The president of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, Togay Bayalti, said: “This will be difficult for Muslim athletes. They don’t have to observe Ramadan if they are doing sport and travelling but they will have to decide whether it is important to them. “It would be nice for the friendship of the Games if they had chosen a different date.”

The games will run from the 27 July to 12 August to coincide with the British Summer holidays. The summer holidays are a six week period running from mid July to early September. During this time, public transportation is generally less crowded and it will be easier to find the 70,000 volunteers needed to keep the games running. The International Olympics Committee has specified that the games must take place between July 15 to August 31. Giselle Davies, IOC spokesperson said, “We give a window to the five bid cities. The host city selects the dates within that window.”

The organisers are working with the Muslim Council of Great Britain to find ways around the problem.

Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Role Models

Submitted by: Ryan Letterman

Media today is constantly bombarding our children with images and messages of how they should act and how they should dress. Even Disney shows like Hannah Montana that we assume would be fine for our children to watch, portray a girl that has a hard time hearing the word no and often dresses much older than her age would warrant. While they do try to put a lesson of some kind in these TV shows, it still sends our children the message that they should look or act like the TV star.

Kids today need someone they can look up to, someone who can set a real example for them. While TV stars may be more popular, and are certainly in the news and tabloids more, they often are not the best examples for our kids. Our kids need to be introduced to ordinary everyday heroes like firefighters and police officers as people to look up to.

Police officers and firefighters are just ordinary people, but to anyone who has used their services whether voluntarily or not, will tell you different. To these people, they are heroes. They have dedicated years of their lives to keeping us safe no matter where in the country we live. There efforts have made a huge difference in the lives of many of us.

Several officers and firefighters upon leaving the force will look for ways to continue to serve the public, public service is in their blood and they don t want to give it up even though they are no longer part of the force. One outlet for their skills where some choose to use their training and experience is to produce emergency vehicles for the government. Such vehicles include trailers used by FEMA, SWAT vehicles, mobile crime labs and many other vehicle types.

While a life spent working on the police force or fire station can be a career and life well spent for many, the step to create emergency vehicles takes a life well spent a step even further. Activities such as this are more than enough to classify any one of these men and women as a home town hero. There are others who can classify themselves as heroes for very different reasons.

The charitable giving that so many of these individuals have done over the years can without a doubt make a difference in many lives. They support children in Africa, charities in their own communities, and many children s care and research centers. They may not be able to cure cancer or provide everything someone might need, but they give what they can and encourage everyone they know to do the same.

A good role model doesn t have to be someone you see on TV every other day or who is constantly in the tabloids. In fact, as police officers and firefighters have shown us, sometimes it is the ordinary people who make the best role models. Role models for our kids should simply be someone who does their best and gives their all every day, and that s what these ordinary everyday heroes do.

US president Donald Trump’s impeachment trial moves to question phase

Wednesday, January 29, 2020

Today, United States Senators submitted written questions to managers from the House for use in the ongoing trial for the impeachment of the sitting president, Donald J. Trump.

The two major U.S. political parties, Democrats and Republicans, have agreed to take turns asking questions today, and tomorrow too if necessary. Written questions will be organized, formatted, and handed to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts to read aloud. Each team, the prosecution and defense, will have five minutes each to answer each question, as in the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton in 1999.

In the United States, impeachment hearings are not structured in the same way as criminal trials. First, House managers made a case to the Senate for why President Trump should be removed from office and, last week, Trump’s own legal team made their case for why he should not, but neither side called or cross-examined witnesses. On Friday, after the question and answer section, the Senate is scheduled to vote on whether to allow witnesses to testify and documents to be subpoenaed.

Donald Trump is accused of misusing his power as President in an attempt to manipulate the upcoming 2020 presidential election. Specifically, there are recorded phone conversations in which he appears to withhold promised military aid from Ukraine until they agree to hold a public investigation of Hunter Biden. Biden’s father, former Vice President Joe Biden, was at the time a front runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and considered likely to be Trump’s opponent in 2020.

If the Senate votes to impeach Trump, he would be removed from office and has the option of barring him from holding office again. Impeachment does not automatically incur any other punishment. Two thirds of the hundred-person Senate must vote to impeach or else the president remains in office. The U.S. Constitution says a president can be impeached for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

While two previous U.S. Presidents have been impeached, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, none have ever been removed from office. President Richard Nixon resigned before impeachment began.
